Movies that I like - Edie Lau’s smol list of films

What kind of movies do you like?

If you enjoy quirky characters and twisted humor in films like "Welcome to the Dollhouse" (such a queer gem honestly) and "Happiness," then we probably have the same favs haha
This is a short list of movies I’ve been thinking about lately, so you can get to know what my vibe is.
Don’t be discouraged if you vibe different, we’re all different, homie.

1. "Ghost World" (2001)

Feel like you don't fit in?
Enid and Rebecca want to talk to you. "Ghost World" is an adventure about two unusual teenagers dealing with the strange aspects of grown-up life. It seems at times like a movie that is a reconceptualised American Beauty. Thora Birch gives this movie the heart it needs and I wish we saw more of her, honestly.

On a different note; the graphic novel Ghost World really put me off recently.
Upon a re-read, Enid is really homophobic and mean. Sucks. Needs a queer re-write.

2. "In the Company of Men" (1997)

"In the Company of Men" is Neil LaBute's unsettling exploration of human cruelty and moral bankruptcy. This thought-provoking film follows two co-workers manipulating a vulnerable woman, weaving uncomfortable truth with twisted humor.

With astute exploration of human psychology, it raises questions about empathy and compassion, leaving viewers contemplating the blurred lines between right and wrong.
Also makes me hate work THAT much more.

3. "Election" (1999)

In Alexander Payne's "Election," high school politics get complicated.
Reese Witherspoon plays an IRL Lisa Simpson with a determined edge and it’s really frustrating but that’s why it’s so good!
This dark, funny film accurately depicts the ridiculousness and immaturity of human competition.

Also don’t forget that Matthew Broderick killed a guy. Far out!
Truly a hidden Reese Witherspoon gem and I adore the Cruel Intentions era of movies.

4. "American Psycho" (2000)

If you're a fan of the disturbingly dark humor, awful men and an 80s view of the Late Capitalist Landscape in Corporate America, then Patrick Bateman in "American Psycho" will certainly pique your interest and have you wanting to scratch your eyes out. I’m putting this on the list as a hatewatch but I’d be lying if I said I hated it completely.

Christian Bale really acts as himself in this one. JUST KIDDING.
This movie is a satirical masterpiece that'll have you questioning the sanity of society as a whole.

It will also have you wondering why all the white boys you went to school with liked this film so much.
Probably a racist dumb white boy thing.

5. "Happiness" (1998)

Todd Solondz's masterpiece "Happiness" is a must-mention.

This film perfectly showcases humanity in a way that feels impossible, blending dark humor and a deep exploration of the human mind. It explores themes of broken relationships, loneliness, and the never-ending search for happiness – all packaged in a way that is both unsettling, thought-provoking and somehow with tenderness and humour??? Damn.

OK so yeah those are some movies I like. Please recommend me some that you like :)
